Christchurch Local Information
Enjoy the beauty of the botanic gardens on a warm summer day, or take a punt down the Avon river as it meanders towards the sea. Often referred to as “the most English city outside England” the ideals of the early settlers can be easily seen through the local architecture styles and even the street names. Visit the Cathedral Square, where the heart of the city is marked by a neo-gothic Anglican cathedral and there are often buskers and speakers to keep you entertained.
Getting around the city centre is easy with vintage trams providing hop-on/hop-off transport. There are buses and taxis easily available or you can simply enjoy your surroundings with a leisurely walk. For those who want to experience more of what Christchurch has to offer, there are shopping malls, golf courses and driving ranges, beaches, wind surfing, wildlife parks and cycle tracks.
In a regional sense, Canterbury is as diverse as it is exciting. From the coastal marine life of Kaikoura to the ski fields of the Southern Alps to the wine growing districts of North Canterbury, there are many places to visit and enjoy. Canterbury has its own adventure town in Hanmer Springs, where there are opportunities to jet boat, bungy jump, horse ride or simply enjoy the hot thermal springs surrounded by the mountains.
